20th World Health Day -Freshanle News

By | April 7, 2024

As we celebrate World Health Day 2024 with the theme ‘My health, my right’, we focus on the critical importance of good food and nutrition, especially in regions such as Central and West Africa.

Nutrition is the foundation of human health; It affects every aspect of physical, cognitive and emotional health. In these regions where socio-economic gaps, environmental challenges and different cultural norms meet, the importance of good nutrition becomes even more evident.

Therefore, multinational companies such as Nestlé support affordable and good nutrition for families through their brands, while ensuring that raw materials such as coffee, cocoa and soy, as well as other components in the supply chain, are sourced sustainably.

“Nestlé reaffirms its commitment to promoting quality and affordable nutrition, especially in Central and West Africa. We believe that access to a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is vital to maintaining optimal health and well-being. “Together we strive for a future where everyone has access to nutritious diets that not only ensure physical health but also support local communities and prosperous societies,” says Mauricio Alarcón, CEO of Nestlé Central and West Africa.

Health Foundation

A multitude of health challenges persist in Central and West Africa, from persistent malnutrition to increasing cases of nutrition-related non-communicable diseases. These nutritional deficiencies not only impede physical growth and development, but also impair immune function, cognitive abilities, and overall disease resistance.

Essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and fats found in a balanced diet are the building blocks of health. Providing adequate nutrition during critical life stages such as pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood is vital for optimal growth, development, and long-term health outcomes.

Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases

In recent years, Africa has seen an increase in the rate of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure and obesity. This rise reflects global trends but is further strengthened by unique regional dynamics. While infectious diseases remain important, lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity account for much of this burden.

A balanced diet is very important in improving overall health and preventing chronic diseases. A balanced diet includes a variety of nutrient-rich foods from all food groups, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats. This nutritional approach not only supports physical health, but also helps with weight management and reduces the risk of obesity and related health problems.

Access to a diverse and balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is not only a basic human necessity but also a prerequisite for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on health, well-being and poverty reduction.

Strengthening Societies Through Education

Empowering communities through nutrition education is a powerful tool in combating malnutrition. Providing information about healthy eating habits and balanced diets through initiatives in schools, community centers, and healthcare organizations can help dispel myths and empower people to make informed dietary choices.

Strengthened Guidelines for Balanced Nutrition

Some companies, such as Nestlé, recognize the importance of nutrition and quality in the products they offer. For example, Nestlé’s R&D center in Ivory Coast is staffed by scientists and food technologists dedicated to developing affordable nutritional solutions for the region. They take into account local dietary preferences and nutritional needs by integrating regionally sourced grains and plant protein sources into formulations. These products are enriched with essential micronutrients such as iron, iodine, zinc and other vitamins and minerals, ensuring optimum nutritional value.

Additionally, these experts have access to Nestlé’s global expert network, advanced analytical equipment, laboratories and pilot facilities at all of the company’s R&D locations.

Widely recognized across the continent, products like Maggi are enriched with essential micronutrients such as iron and iodine, increasing nutritional intake while meeting local preferences. Similarly, iron-enriched Cerelac and calcium-enriched Nido provide vital nutrients required for children’s growth and development.

The company recently launched Nido Milk & Soya, a product that integrates locally sourced soybeans in Nigeria. This initiative provides consumers with a budget-friendly option for nutritious consumption while ensuring healthy eating.

Leveraging the Power of Collaboration

The path to improving nutrition in Central and West Africa requires collaborative efforts across sectors and stakeholders. By partnering with governments, non-governmental organisations, academia and the private sector, we can bring together resources, expertise and innovation to create meaningful change in the region.

Nestlé reaffirms its commitment to being a force for good by addressing the root causes of malnutrition, advocating for food security policies, and empowering individuals and communities with information and resources to make informed dietary choices. This creates a future where everyone experiences the highest standard of health and well-being in the long term.
