Emma Hayes: It ‘wasn’t right’ to call actor-actor relationships ‘inappropriate’

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said it was “inappropriate to use the term inappropriate” when describing relationships between players in the same squad, adding that her comments this week were “unnecessarily exaggerated”.

On Thursday, Hayes said player-to-player relationships in the same dressing room could cause difficulties for managers. Hayes made the comments while responding to questions surrounding the issue of manager-player relations, which came to the fore this week after Leicester manager Willie Kirk was suspended by the club over allegations of an affair with a Leicester player.

During his response, Hayes said: “Player-coach relationships are inappropriate, player-to-player relationships are inappropriate.”

There are players in the Chelsea squad who are in relationships with each other, including Jess Carter. The England and Chelsea defender is in a relationship with goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

Chelsea striker Erin Cuthbert still finds herself dreaming of her first Champions League trophy despite boss Emma Hayes’ solid, realistic approach to the competition.

The Blues, who face Ajax at Amsterdam’s Johan Cruyff Arena on Tuesday night in the first of their two-legged last eight, continue their bid to become the second English team to complete the quadruple, as Arsenal Women did in 2007. – While Hayes was a member of the Gunners’ coaching staff.

The European club title is the one prize that has eluded Hayes, who will take up her new role as head coach of the United States women’s national team at the end of the season after winning 15 trophies in charge of Chelsea.

Sherida Spitse is not in Ajax’s squad this evening, but the club captain said the following before the match:

“Ajax also wants to play football and we are not afraid. Maybe we play with a little attitude, because it is Ajax.”

Emma Hayes highlighted Spitse’s abilities as an example of the threat Ajax pose.

“I know Spitse won’t play tomorrow but I’m a big fan of him, I think he’s a fantastic footballer. I think they’re a club with serious ambitions in Europe, they’ve shown that so far. Because we played with them without knowing how good they were, so we’re definitely keeping our eyes closed.” “We will not go into this.”
