It’s not just designers and celebrities who set trends; Movies and television shows have created many fashion trends: take this year’s Golden Globe nominees.
After breaking box office records, “Barbie” topped the list with 10 nominations, while hit series such as “Succession” and “The Crown” swept various television categories with nine and four nominations, respectively. Some of the biggest trends on the big screen have spilled over into the real world, with Barbiecore making its mark on fashion, beauty and quiet luxury, and people of all classes channeling the Roy family’s penchant for minimalist dressing.

WWD details the Golden Globe-worthy inspirations behind some of this year’s biggest fashion moments.
“Barbie”
After Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie were first spotted filming “Barbie” in Los Angeles, Barbiecore took the internet (and naturally the fashion world) by storm for a full year before its release. Inspired by Mattel’s beloved doll, the all-pink aesthetic emphasizes bold femininity. High platforms, heart-shaped bags and matching sets are all the height of Barbiecore; This trend can even be seen on the catwalks of Valentino, Chanel and Versace.
TikTok and Google are looking for anything Barbiecore is on the rise in 2022 and 2023; Many brands such as Zara, Crocs and Nyx are launching Barbie-themed collaborations depending on the movie’s release. During the “Barbie” press tour, Robbie took the trend to new heights by channeling several of the doll’s iconic looks, all curated by stylist Andrew Mukamal.
“Barbie” is one of this year’s top Golden Globe nominees. The film received a total of 10 nominations, including Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Director (Motion Picture) for Greta Gerwig, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for Robbie.
“Subrogation”
“Succession” may have taken its final bow this year, but the trends set by its devious cast of characters are proving to be timeless. Quiet luxury, also known as hidden wealth, replaces flashy storefronts with subtle, high-end staples, eschewing the ostentatious accents and logo prints sometimes associated with the wealthy.
The wardrobes of Shiv, Logan, and the rest of the Roy lineage put this minimalist trend back on the map after experiencing a major breakthrough in the ’90s. Following the HBO series’ fourth season premiere, Google searches for “quiet luxury,” “hidden wealth,” and “old money style” increased. It was also copied by labels such as Fendi, Christian Dior and Armani Privè in 2023.
“Succession” is nominated for nine Golden Globe awards, including Best Television Series (Drama) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series (Drama) for Sarah Snook.
“Crown”
The late Princess of Wales has been a constant source of sartorial inspiration; so it’s no surprise that there’s been a major resurgence of Diana’s fashion following Elizabeth Debicki’s role in “The Crown.”
Sportswear retailer Mitchell & Ness has recreated the Philadelphia Eagles jacket that Diana wore in the ’80s and ’90s. Priced at $400 and already sold out, the bomber is now selling for twice its original cost. A version of the jacket signed by Kylie Kelce, wife of Eagles center Jason Kelce, even fetched $100,000 at auction in November.
Promotional images for the final season of “The Crown” depicted Debicki in a teal, one-piece swimsuit reminiscent of the color Diana wore in 1997. According to Google, searches for “one-piece swimsuit” skyrocketed in the weeks following the series’ premiere. Meanwhile, searches for “blue jersey” saw an almost tenfold increase in traffic.
“The Crown” earned four Golden Globe nominations for Debicki, including Best Television Series (Drama) and Best Supporting Actress (Television).
“Taylor Swift: Eras Tour”
Leave it to Taylor Swift to make friendship bracelets cool again. The trend refers to the lyric “You’re on Your Own, Kid” from one of his songs.
Swift’s worldwide “Eras Tour” allowed fans to master the art of assembling beaded bracelets traditionally traded between “Swifties” at shows. This concert tradition also spread to cinemas with the big screen debut of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.” The documentary was nominated for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, one of the Golden Globes’ newest categories.
“Purple color”
The film’s title says it all: “The Color Purple,” being remade this Christmas, has already sparked a craze for purple hues, thanks to producer Oprah Winfrey. “Okay, you’ve all seen the trailer and I’m giving you six months to get your outfit ready for opening day,” Winfrey said in an Instagram video earlier this year. “Anything purple.”
Many designers, including Prabal Gurung, Altuzarra and LaQuan Smith, joined the purple trend this year, sending lilac, lavender and mauve hues down the runway. This trend is also on the rise on the red carpet; Many stars followed Winfrey’s directive at the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles.
“The Color Purple” is nominated for two Golden Globes, with Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks nominated for Best Performance by an Actress (Musical or Comedy) and Best Supporting Actress (Motion Picture), respectively.
“Weather”
“Air” may not have replicated the box office success of 2023 blockbusters like “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer,” but it was praised by critics for its depiction of the rise of Nike following the release of the Air Jordan sneaker.
High-top shoes had gained a following long before the “Air” was released, but the surge in Jordan sales this year can be attributed in part to Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s latest collaboration. Nike released its year-end financial statistics in September, revealing that Air Jordans will be responsible for 12.9 percent of the brand’s sales in 2023: that’s total revenue of more than $6.5 billion.
“Air” is in the running for two Golden Globe awards for Damon, Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Performance by an Actor (Musical or Comedy).
