Addressing the nation on New Year’s Eve, the 83-year-old actor said: “I decided now is the right time. I will step down as Queen of Denmark on January 14, 2024, 52 years after succeeding my beloved father. I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.
Thanking those who supported her throughout her fifty-year reign, the Danish queen added: “The support and help I have received over the years has been decisive in my ability to fulfill my duty. I hope that the new royal couple will be greeted with the same trust and love that I have received.”
