A beautiful stay in one of Europe’s most fascinating cities

Home to bullfights, flamenco, colorful festivals and the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, Seville should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Sometimes overlooked by big cities like Madrid and Barcelona, Seville may be smaller but there’s a reason it’s known as the Pearl of Andalusia. Originally the economic center of the Spanish empire, the country’s fourth largest city has transformed into a cultural and historical hub that boasts three World Heritage Sites and even claims to be the birthplace of tapas.

Cool and contemporary, Magdalena Plaza Seville is perfectly located in the old town of this lively city. The hotel, which runs entirely on renewable energy, may be newer for a city so rich in history, but it’s worth your time.

Where

The hotel is located in the city’s Alfalfa neighbourhood, known for its narrow streets, independent shops and wine bars. The 40-minute bus ride from the airport to the hotel costs just five euros (£4.30) and goes through the heart of the city.

The building is located opposite the elegant Magdalena Plaza (hence its name), a quiet pedestrianized square lined with trees and fountains. It’s also conveniently located just a 15-minute walk from many attractions, including Seville Cathedral and the Royal Alcazar (where Dorne was filmed in season 5 of Game of Thrones). For shoppers, the upscale shopping district of Plaza Nueva is just nearby.

Style

Built in 2021, the hotel may be relatively young, but its architecture is inspired by the city’s history and blends a variety of styles in the guest rooms, restaurants, rooftop bar, and pool.

The black and white stone façade of the building is simple but classic, while the interior is modern. Inside the hotel, Andalusian touches including intricate trellises, native plants and seating in soft, earthy tones add a relaxed vibrancy to the space. A traditional red-and-white flamenco dress is on temporary display next to the gold reception desk, reminding guests of the city’s traditions.

Two floor-to-ceiling bookcases filled with novels and trinkets form a gateway from reception to the rest of the hotel. Cross the lobby to find yourself in the hotel’s beautiful bar. This area is quite quiet compared to the bars and is a great place for cafe con leche in the afternoon. As you proceed a little further, you enter the hotel restaurant, where breakfast is served every day.

Room

Magdalena Plaza Hotel has 89 stylish guest rooms and suites spread over four floors. There are eight room options, including the Premium Collection room. This option features a palette of elegant bronze hardware and marble and hardwood floors, accented with soft blue furniture. Black and white photographs of the city add a homey feel to the place. The Premium Collection room I stayed in had a small balcony; I found this balcony to be the perfect place to spend a slow morning or watch the stunning sunset at the Real Parroquia de Santa María Magdalena, a Baroque-style church built in the 17th century. .

Food and drink

The hotel has not one but two restaurants for guests to discover Spanish and Andalusian cuisine; both are run by Michelin-starred chefs.

Ground-floor restaurant Eneko Basque Seville is a lively space with olive green, C-shaped booths, native plants and large, halo-shaped lighting. The menu is based on Basque cuisine, meaning grilled dishes like smoked Iberian pork with mash and truffles are highlights.

The luxurious Justa Rufino is located in a narrow street at the entrance of the hotel.

To say that this restaurant does Spanish cuisine well would be an understatement. Spanish cuisine staples like croquettes de jamon iberico or patatas bravas are elevated from the standard tapas bar by chef Manuel Berganza. Like Eneko, the grill is where the menu shines, so save space.

But if you’re feeling a little peckish, order the oxtail fritters with truffle mayonnaise and pickled onions. It was one of the best things I’ve eaten in a long time. Dine next to the kitchen, outdoors or on the terrace.

Magdalena Plaza facilities

For those days when your legs are too tired to move and the sun is too hot to stand, head to the top floor of the hotel and take a dip in the pool. Relax on the gray and beige sun loungers, order a cocktail and relax. Repeat this to find a prime spot from which to take in postcard views of the Sevillian skyline in the evening.

Conversely, if 20,000+ steps a day aren’t enough, there’s also a 24-hour gym with weights and cardio equipment.

Best for

Friends and history buffs. The hotel offers quiet respite away from the crowded barrios of Seville. Whether you want to learn about the city’s history or enjoy tapas, the Pearl of Andalusia is the ideal place to relax between bouts of excitement.
