After days of unstable weather conditions, more heavy rain is expected in most of the country by the end of the week.

Heavy rain was seen in most parts of the country on Tuesday. But although some areas were drier on Wednesday morning, the Met Office warned that the wet weather would increase further on Sunday morning, with much of the country covered in rain.

The Environment Agency also issued 36 flood warnings on Wednesday in areas where flooding was expected; Another 151 flood warnings were issued in places where flooding is possible.

The Met Office has predicted rain will move slowly across northern parts of England on Wednesday, before moving northwards in Scotland on Thursday. Showers or longer rain were expected over the weekend; Weather maps showed showers covering much of the UK on Sunday morning before heading east to leave a drier day.

Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir said rain “will continue to plague the north of England and northern parts of Wales on Wednesday evening and overnight.” He added: “Some heavier blows cannot be ruled out as it slowly nudges across the southern counties of England. Scotland is also pushing into Northern Ireland… The weather is pretty torrential wherever you are.”
