2 tips on Cheltenham Festival day

Marcus Armytage’s best bet

Teahupoo (Permanent Hurdle, 3.30): A light campaign so far this season could pay handsomely here for Teahupoo’s connections, who clearly stand out in the official ratings and have tantalizing potential for higher ratings. He remains an undisclosed hurdler and looks set to target this race since finishing a perfect 3rd at last year’s renewal. Jack Kennedy has an excellent record on horseback and in a race devoid of significant depth there is great enthusiasm for Teahupoo to pull all the stops in this year’s Stayers’ Hurdle.

Telegraph Sport’s best bet

Hi Senor (Ryanair Tracker, 2.50): This race looks wide open given rain has hurt long-time favorite Banbridge’s chances. Envoi Allen, Stage Star and Capodanno have serious chances, but at this price Ahoy Senor needs to be supported. This is the time of year when he tends to come into his own and the southpaw will benefit from a return to the track after a good run at Ascot last month. Expect Derek Fox to push him to the front and give him a grueling endurance test over two and a half miles. If his jump continues, he should have a chance of reaching the bottom of the hill.

Back Crambo to lead the much-needed English challenge on day three of Cheltenham

By Marcus Armytage at Cheltenham

Is Thursday the day the Brits will finally make it big at this year’s Cheltenham Festival? You could argue they need a change of horses rather than a change of luck, but the home-trained Crambo has an excellent chance of winning the Paddy Power Stayers Hurdle and likewise keeping Ga Law at home in the Ryanair Chase.

The remaining hurdle division is crying out for a new star and the improving seven-year-old Crambo, who has performed only minimally in his races, may finally break free from the old guard of last year’s surprise winner Paisley Park Dashel Drasher Sire Du Berlais and previous winner Flooring Porter, Racehorses’ Re-Analysis We invite you to a less tiring pastime, such as training lessons.

Fergal O’Brien, one of the course’s most local instructors, is yet to congratulate the Festival winner. As well as Long Walk Hurdle winner Crambo, fresh from his Ascot run at Christmas, he has the useful Dysart Enos, who is also unbeaten in Thursday’s filly race; This is probably his best two chances at the meeting so far and he will be hoping for some comeback.

Of course, one must also take note of the Willie Mullins runners Asterion Forlonges and Sir Gerhard; Noble Yeats, whose nephew Emme is the 2022 Grand National winner, is bidding to give race owner Robert Waley-Cohen a second victory after the 1989 Rustle. came out of them.

Jamie Snowden has in-form Cheltenham specialist Ga Law for the Ryanair Chase. The trainer says the horse is flying at home and could be the horse to break the pressure of the short price winners at this meeting.

“He comes into the race in much better form than last year when he finished fifth and was beaten by only nine and a half lengths,” Snowden explained. “If he jumps better than the second year last year, he will go right there.”

The Irish selection looks set to feature the Mullins-trained runner Capodanno, who won the Cotswold Chase last time, but Joseph O’Brtien’s Banbridge and Henry de Bromhead’s Envoi Allen will have their own backers.

Gray Dawning, a very impressive winner at Warwick last time, should go well for the Skelton brothers at Turners, while Gavin Cromwell’s top weight Inothewayurthinkin looks set for the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Chase for amateur riders. It’s not a downside that Tuesday’s National Game Chase winner Derek O’Conner is at Corbett’s Cross.

My morning routine this week was to start my day riding for Gordon Elliott and on Wednesday I sat on Riaan, an attractive seven-year-old chaser for Gordon Elliott. A 20-1 shot for the TrustATrader Plate Handicap Chase.

My ride on Monday and Tuesday, The Goffer, finished fifth on Ultima but couldn’t quite make it home in the mud. It was as if she had seen it all, having been here before, but instead, all the way to the practice area in the middle of the track, Riann’s eyes were on the stalks, examining the powder cars with their orange flashing lights. and the people preparing the course for the day.

You didn’t need to be Dr Dolittle to know that this was his first visit to Cheltenham but it was a lovely ride and his focus shifted between the distant stands and the 100 or so horses as we hopped in to give them some hay. outside and around it. His character won me over and good luck to him.

This could be Elliott’s day, though. Teahupoo, who will enjoy the conditions in the Stayers Hurdle, has a great chance, as does the steady banker with Brighterdays ahead in the Ryanair Mares’ Novice Hurdle.
