With their disastrous World Cup campaign in the rearview mirror, England will now test their white-ball prowess once again as they head to the West Indies for a limited-overs tour.

The West Indies failed to qualify for this year’s World Cup but it gives England a chance to bounce back after being eliminated from the tournament with one win in their first six matches.

The England team will face the home team in three one-day internationals followed by five Twenty20 internationals over three weeks in December.

This will be the first time England have played the West Indies in ODIs in over four years and they will be hoping for a better showing than that produced during a ‘difficult’ period in India.

When?

England’s limited-overs tour of the West Indies will run from Sunday 3 December to Thursday 21 December. Since there is no warm-up match, England will play directly against the home team.

What’s the latest news?

By Tim Wigmore

Jos Buttler will aim to put more emphasis on his batting and wicket-keeping during England’s white-ball tour of the Caribbean after admitting it was difficult to devote enough time to personal performance during the World Cup.

“This is a big learning for me; managing my own game is vital for the team and finding different ways of doing that that will enable me to come out with a clear mind,” England’s white-ball captain said. The first one-day international is against the West Indies on Sunday. “I think about how I managed my time, I think that was something I did really well up until that point in the World Cup.”

“Trying to find the right time and balance things with my own game,” Buttler explained. “What I always wanted to do in my career was to strive for balance. “Naturally as captain you get extra responsibility, there’s a lot you have to handle, but I enjoyed it.”

Phil Salt and Will Jacks will open the batting together. Buttler dismissed suggestions that he might open the batting; It was a role he made a big impact in T20 internationals, where he averaged 49.2 in the opener, but never in ODIs.

“I played around 180 ODIs and had great success in the middle order. “This has been my superpower in this format of the game and I want to focus on it even more.”

The England captain said the poor World Cup defense had strengthened his resolve for the rest of his international career.

“I have to use this as motivation and hunger to push myself and my team forward and learn from this; I have to use this as a positive experience for the rest of my career.”

“We’ve had a bad tournament. It’s been in a great place for a long time and you see the depth of talent of the guys coming through and you want to help shape that era of white-ball cricket. “It’s something I feel a responsibility and motivation for and I’m always trying to do my best individually and reach my potential. I’m incredibly motivated. Anytime you’re challenged and pushed back and people challenge those things, it definitely lights a few fires and keeps you motivated.

‘There is some really exciting talent in this team’

Buttler said it felt like a fresh start for the team, with only five members of England’s World Cup squad and Brydon Carse a substitute in the ODI squad.

“This is definitely a bit of a fresh start. There is some truly exciting talent on this team; young men who are willing to seize opportunities and perform.”

Despite the personnel change and a poor World Cup campaign, Buttler will deliver “very similar messages” to the team: he will continue the aggressive approach that served England well from 2015-22, while also emphasizing the need to adapt.

“You want to reinforce the way we want to play. It’s still a very positive and aggressive style of cricket but there’s a framework within that to always gear up and down and give some players clarity on where that fits into the team and the roles we want them to play.
