England’s Euro 2024 fixtures: Group, full schedule and latest odds

By | March 15, 2024

Gareth Southgate is open-minded about staying in England beyond Euro 2024 this summer.

The 53-year-old’s contract runs until December and he accepts he may not be in action when England play Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland, Greece and Finland in the autumn.

However, he stressed that his decision has not yet been made and that he is open to the possibility of staying and working with England’s exciting squad of players, led by Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham.

“There’s a good chance that half the coaches won’t be here after the European Championship. “This is international football,” he said.

“You should see how the summer goes. It’s that simple. In my view, I know what we can achieve in the summer, I know what my own criterion of success will be and after that I don’t really think about anything else.

“It’s exciting to get the team, no doubt, it’s always exciting to get the team no matter what the team’s strengths are. Ultimately we have to perform and you have to make the decisions that are best for everyone. I won’t be in a position to make that decision before the tournament.”

What is the latest situation in England?

Gareth Southgate has revealed that Arsenal’s in-form defender Ben White does not currently want to be selected by England.

The 26-year-old has played in the Premier League this season but has not played for the national team since the 2022 World Cup.

White returned early from Qatar for what the Football Association called “personal reasons” and reports later emerged of him allegedly fighting with England assistant Steve Holland.

Southgate denied any such incident on Thursday as he hoped to include the defender in his squad for Euro 2024 friendly matches against Brazil and Belgium in March.

The manager revealed that White would otherwise be included in his 25-man squad: “Obviously, when he’s fit, I can’t sit here and say he doesn’t deserve to be there.

“We, John McDermott and I, got a call from Edu (Arsenal sporting director) last week (and he) said Ben doesn’t want to be included in the England squad at the moment.

“For me, this is a big shame. He is a player we took for the Euros, a player we took for the World Cup, and I talked to him after Qatar because I wanted to choose him.

“He’s not available to us and there’s no problem between us and I have to say there’s never been an issue with (coach) Steve Holland because it’s been brought up in the articles and I don’t like it.

“I want this door to be wide open. He would be in this squad but he is not available for us and I need to focus on who can help us.”

Meanwhile, Jarrad Branthwaite and Anthony Gordon received their first England call-ups but Kalvin Phillips had no place in Southgate’s final squad before making his Euro 2024 selection.

Joe Gomez, who won the last of his 11 consecutive matches in October 2020, returned from the international environment to the Wembley friendly matches against Belgium and Brazil in March.

Ivan Toney returned at the first opportunity after serving the Football Association’s eight-month betting ban, but Raheem Sterling is once again conspicuous by his absence.
