The Met Office has warned of danger to life as Storm Ashley hits parts of the UK.

The first storm of the season will “likely” bring injury hazards and winds of up to 80 miles per hour are forecast, the weather agency said.

A yellow wind warning for north-west Scotland remains in force until midnight on Sunday, with the Met Office warning that “injuries and danger to life may occur due to large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties”. .

Meteorologist Dan Stroud said “very strong, severe storms” would coincide with high spring tides, which could lead to “very large waves.”

A milder yellow wind warning will also remain in place until midnight for the whole of Scotland and Northern Ireland and parts of north-west England and Wales. This may lead to disruptions such as damage to buildings and power outages.

The north of Scotland will remain under a yellow warning due to wind until 9am on Monday.
