How We Evaluated Car GPS Tracking Devices
During this test, our office looked like a hacker hideout in a heist movie. We set out to determine the following parameters when each interface is viewed on multiple screens and each application is running:
To test alert reliability, we geofenced each tracker around our office in Ann Arbor. We then set each one to notify the crew when we exceed 65 mph. Additional alerts we set up, but which varied from tracker to tracker, included hard braking, hard acceleration, hard cornering, and fuel levels. Finally, we put viewers in a Ford Bronco where tester Collin Morgan races between tall city buildings, underground parking ramps, highway driving, and tunnel crossings.
Collin Morgan triggered as many alerts as possible along his route and called us whenever he wanted. As Collin drove the Bronco, we quickly recorded alerts and monitored each device for signal drops coming into the office. After dozens of emails and texts, we were impressed to see that we did not witness a single signal drop on any of these trackers, even when the Bronco went five stories underground.
To evaluate all this data and features With each tracker offered, we researched the apps and desktop versions of each, taking notes on what types of alerts could be triggered, what reports could be run, and notification methods (SMS, email, or app).

Installing a GPS tracker on someone’s vehicle without their consent is illegal in most states. If you suspect this is occurring, check the OBD-II port, look for suspicious wires coming from the battery, and inspect other areas such as under the seats, wheel wells, and dash. If you find any suspicious devices, contact the police immediately.
Where do you put a GPS tracker in the car?
