By | January 17, 2024

Samsung brings productive artificial intelligence technologies to the new Galaxy S24 series of Android-powered smartphones. Features like instantly translating audio between users and organizing phones are part of Samsung’s Galaxy AI artificial intelligence capabilities. Samsung says it’s also collaborating with Google (GOOG, GOOGL) to leverage the Gemini AI model for a handful of AI offerings.

The $799 Galaxy S24, $999 Galaxy S24+ and $1,299 Galaxy S24 Ultra go on sale Jan. 31, serving as the beginning of what’s expected to be a broader push among consumer tech companies to cash in on the generative AI boom .

All three phones have the same artificial intelligence features; This allows you to use these functions regardless of whether you choose the entry-level S24 or the top-tier S24 Ultra. Generative AI capabilities include the ability to quickly summarize content on web pages; Live Translation, which allows you to instantly translate phone calls from one language to another; and Transcript Assist, which allows you to record a conversation and automatically detect when different speakers are speaking.

Photo editing functions include the ability to manipulate objects in images, allowing you to move a person from one side of the shot to another, for example, and the option to zoom out of an image and use generative AI to fill in the background.

One of the standout features of the Galaxy S24 series is Circle to Search, which allows you to circle items on the screen and then quickly search for them via Google search. So if you’re scrolling through social media and see a photo of a great place, you can circle it on your screen and get more information about it via Google.

Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro also have or are getting many of the same features as the Galaxy S24 series. However, Google’s smartphones do not have as much market share as Samsung’s; This means the S24 series will be the first time many consumers have access to on-device generative AI.

The Galaxy S24 is just one of a number of devices and products that tech giants will launch in 2024 to capitalize on interest in generative AI. PC makers are adding generative AI to laptops and desktops through new chips and a new keyboard key for Microsoft’s ( MSFT ) AI-powered Copilot. Even automakers are taking action, with Mercedes (MBG.DE) and Volkswagen (VWAGY) adding ChatGPT to their vehicles in the coming months. Mercedes’ offer will be in beta.

But Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series offers more than improved AI tricks. S24 and S24+ come with 6.2-inch and 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x displays, respectively. These are larger than the 6.1-inch and 6.6-inch screens found on the S23 and S23+. Like the S23 Ultra, the S24 Ultra also comes with a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x display.

All three phones now offer screen refresh rates between 1 and 120 Hz; This means they can increase the number of frames you see per second to 120 frames per second for smooth animations, or reduce the refresh rate to 1 frame per second to save battery life.

On the camera front, Samsung has equipped the S24 and S24+ models with a triple lens, including a 50-megapixel wide-angle lens, a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 10 MP telephoto lens. The telephoto lens gives you up to 3x optical zoom. Meanwhile, the S24 Ultra has a 200 MP wide-angle camera, a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, as well as a 50 MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom.

This is actually a step down from the 10x optical zoom Samsung uses on the S23 Ultra, but in reality it will probably prove more useful, given that trying to get your subject into the frame at 10x zoom becomes quite difficult with even the slightest twitch. your hand throwing the frame.

All of these are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. In terms of memory, the S24 has 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage. The S24+ and S24 Ultra both have 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage. The S24 Ultra also has a 1TB storage option.

The addition of generative AI elements to the Galaxy S24 series gives Samsung a hot new technology to help market its latest smartphones. The smartphone market has generally become quite stale in the last few years. After all, there are only so many incremental changes you can make to a phone’s camera or display before consumers start to tire of them.

With Galaxy AI, Samsung has a chance to make generative artificial intelligence a cornerstone of smartphones for the next few generations. But the company will need to deliver on its AI promises and keep pushing forward if it’s going to capture consumers’ attention and keep them wanting more.
