The carpet for the 2024 Oscars has turned red again after last year’s ‘champagne’ extravaganza. The stars are primed and prepared and ready to give you their best winner smiles and loser grins. Welcome to Hollywood baby, where the awards season finale takes place (frankly, thank God for that).
Some films may be nominated, but at this pace we’re in it for dresses and – hopefully – flashy men’s clothing, too. Question: Are shirts dead yet, or are we heading towards a tie and shirt match/clash scenario? Tense hooks, folks!
Of course, we’re in an age of luxury brand bias on the carpet, and the biggest stars will be acting as ambassadors for fashion house paymasters, but let’s hope that doesn’t make it boring. If we’re going to stay up all night for this, we want sexy sartorial moves, thank you.
We assume Margot Robbie will unveil the mother of all Barbie looks – which could also be a final send-off for the doll costume, designed by Andrew Murakami, of course. She certainly embodied the new fad of ‘method dressing’, where red carpet appearances are a clever marketing ploy to remind the star of her role. Also look out for candidate Emma Stone, who did admirable work in the area of puffy shoulder advocacy in her Poor Things tribute wardrobe, aided and abetted by Louis Vuitton.
One of the women we are looking forward to is Sandra Hüller, who was nominated for the best actress award for the movie Anatomy of a Fall. This week, Phoebe was announced as the face of Philo’s second collection drop. Will this be Phoebs’ first red carpet moment? If so, I’m very excited.
Stay tuned for all the looks, the good, the bad, and the just plain awful. Let’s go…
The best-dressed stars of the 2024 Oscars:
Emily Blunt – nominated for her first Oscar for Oppenheimer (Best Supporting Actress) – in a sparkly lemon Schiaparelli number gives a Y-front, if we’re being honest.
Lupita Nyong’o brings just the right amount of flapper girl in this Armani Privé ice blue feathered confection.
Danielle Brooks delivers a dose of corset in her black Dolce & Gabbana number, complete with girdle and train tails.
That’s what we call it: Peplum is back. Emma Stone is rocking major layering vibes at Louis Vuitton.
Kirsten Dunst is stunning in white Gucci! Towards the square neckline.
Cynthia Erivo delivers Wicked Elphaba energy in green leather custom Louis Vuitton.
Anya Taylor gives us Joy in her ethereal, mermaid, tiered gown by Dior. She looks a bit like a woman using toilet paper, but she’s gorgeous.
Call to the doctor. Ncuti Gatwa looks so stylish, also see the brooch! We said…
Hailee Steinfeld rocks a mermaid look in opulent Elie Saab Couture.
America Ferrera gets in the Barbie spirit with her shocking pink number. Frankly, we’re pretty thankful for a pop of color.
Billie Eilish goes for the on-trend sexy secretary with her tweed skirt suit.
Andrea Riseborough has high praise for Loewe, fresh off the fall-winter runway.
Colman Domingo offers an interesting example of accessories to amp up a typical DJ (in this case, Louis Vuitton): cowboy boots and a crystal bow tie, guys?
For Mark Ronson and his wife Grace Gummer (also Meryl Streep’s daughter, baby reality fans), hers is Sabato de Sarno Gucci.
And… our first Ken! Simu Liu is giving off interesting costume vibes at Fendi. Watch out for the brooches, there’s something going on with Nana-jewelled men!
Issa Rae, yes, wearing another black dress; This one is by AMI Paris. It turns out a wonderful leg. Angelina gives off shades of 2012.
Gabrielle Union graced the carpet with her first peplum look of the night; A shimmery, silvery look courtesy of Carolina Herrera. Her husband, former basketball champion Dwyane Wade, is equally stylish in Atelier Versace. Brava.
First Best Actress nominee Sandra Hüller is on the carpet! Okay, so it’s pretty sad that the new face of Phoebe Philo isn’t wearing this (minor high fashion hiccup) but it also totally fits this particular Schiaparelli number. We are always here to take up space in tailoring. However, if you sit next to him, it may not be so good.
A chic, simple black dress from Tamara Ralph (complete with new neckline!) is worn by Eva Longoria.
Jamie Lee Curtis in her floor-sweeping Dolce & Gabbana black dress and gold cuffs This isn’t my first rodeo.
We’re here for Past Lives director Celine Song’s Loewe suit. Chic.
Let’s hear it from the leading man: The Holdovers’ breakout star Dominic Sessa leads the boys in his Tom Ford velvet tuxedo.
Hey Baby! Vanessa Hudgens revealed a classic body shape with black Vera Wang and Chopard jewelry.
First vintage moment klaxon – Laverne Cox in Mugler FW86. An excellent start.
Her A lot It’s early but the red carpet presenters are taking pole position, here’s British beauty Amelia Dimoldenberg in pink Gucci and Messika jewels and Zanna Roberts Rassi in checkerboard Oscar de la Renta.
