Motorists faced queues nearly 10 miles long clockwise around Dartford Pass on the M25 following a vehicle fire.
All clockwise lanes of the M25 from junction 1a (Swanscombe) to junction 1b (A296 Princes Road, Dartford) were stopped at 10.25am.
All four lanes reopened at 12:35 p.m.
Queues formed around the Essex-Kent border after authorities closed the road at around 10.25am.
Elsewhere, traffic was backed up anti-clockwise for nearly four miles on the M25 near Waltham Cross in north London on Friday due to roadworks.
According to live data provided by Inrix, the slow-moving traffic jam stretched from junction 26 (Waltham Abbey) to junction 25 (A10 Enfield) around a construction site.
On the tube, there were serious delays on the Northern line following the fire alarm at Colindale.
There is no surface service between West Croydon and Sydenham due to signal failure. The outage is expected to last until 15:00.
All other lines provide good service.
Two lanes now closed – two lanes open on the M25 at Dartford

There is a queue of traffic on the clockwise M25 from J1a A206 (QE2 Bridge) to J1b A296 (Dartford) and two lanes are closed due to a vehicle fire.
Traffic congestion has resumed at J30 (A13 Lakeside) over the bridge.
Lanes one and two (four lanes) will remain closed following a 25-minute wait until 10:45am.
Counterclockwise queues are also forming due to a separate fault.
London Overground suspended
