Messianic Grealish leads Treble celebrations

Grealish leads City title celebrations

“Hang it in the Louvre,” suggested the subject of this instantly iconic photograph from Manchester City’s treble-winning trophy parade. Jack Grealish certainly has a point and he knows how to have fun. We haven’t seen such an intoxicating atmosphere since the Ashes victory mace fight, aka the Pieterson and Flintoff parade. Captured in a quasi-religious pose, Grealish receives every drop of the praise such an achievement deserves. And why not?

the great outdoors

Cycling

There’s always something special about watching sporting events outdoors, away from stadiums. A good example is this beautiful photo of the peloton cycling on the Coll de la Creueta during Stage 3 of the 102nd Volta Ciclista a Catalunya race in La Molina, Spain. You can almost feel the relief as the drivers make their way down the hill after struggling with the landscape receding behind them.

What is the way to submit? While batting in England’s second innings in the fifth Ashes test, Broad denied singles from Starc’s first five balls; His sixth over was crushed via square leg for six. This would be the last ball of Broad’s batting career, but the last ball of his bowling career proved to be just as important. Broad won the test by taking the last wicket of Australia’s second innings, after claiming his 603rd wicket on the previous tour, and drew the series with his 604th and final wicket for England.

Pleasure and pain. Alexis Holmes of the United States celebrates after leading her team to the gold medal after Femke Bol of the Netherlands agonizingly failed to reach the finish line in the 4×400-meter medley relay final at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. However, Bol would finish the games with two gold medals.

technical excellence

In photography we often talk about light, color and composition; It all comes together in this photo of Coco Gauff officiating in her third-round singles match against Bernarda Pera at the 2023 Australian Open. An equally interesting component that is a great example of this is form; how we perceive three-dimensional objects in a two-dimensional photograph. The art of perspective is concerned with the study of light and the mastery of shadows. It brings a picture closer to reality; You may not be able to see the details in the shadows here, but it’s more real than many pictures you can see.

Much of the impact of this goal was its completely unexpected nature. Manchester United have not had the best of their last season and were facing a furious and energized Everton due to a 10-point deduction for breaking the Premier League’s financial rules. Alejandro Garnacho silenced the impassioned fans at Goodison Park with his incredible effort in the third minute, taking a few steps back to turn Diogo Dalot’s cross with an unstoppable bicycle kick before sending the ball over Jordan Pickford and into the net. It was one of the greatest of its kind. The feat was captured by Telegraph regular Jon Super, who captured something similar a few years ago: Wayne Rooney’s stunning goal against Manchester City in 2011.

The brutality of ‘sweet science’

Finland’s Robert Helenius throws a left hook into the side of British heavyweight Anthony Joshua and the image perfectly captures the violence and brutality of the sport often referred to as the ‘sweet science’. Joshua would go on to win with a spectacular one-punch knockout in the seventh round at London’s O2 Arena, but was ridiculed by fans during the match as he failed to achieve anything significant until the big right hand grounder that ended the contest. Former unified champion Joshua, who edged Otto Wallin in December, needs to get another title shot in 2024 against Filip Hrgovic for the IBF belt and even against Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk for other titles.

They were outnumbered and hunted by the pack, but it didn’t work in this case. South African lock RG Snyman races towards the line to score the only try of the match during the Springboks’ World Cup semi-final victory over England.

Rubiales caused outrage

Although technically not the best photo, it is this year’s sports photo in terms of expression, newsworthiness and impact. Jenni Hermoso was kissed by Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales after Spain defeated England in the World Cup final: violent accusations, an international scandal, a national soul-searching in Spain, lost jobs, a hunger strike and a court case.

Earps dives in vain

Remote cameras have come to the fore lately, especially in football, as they can capture angles that photographers cannot reach. Here, England goalkeeper Mary Earps pounces in vain as Australia’s Sam Kerr scores her team’s first goal in the Lionesses’ 3-1 World Cup semi-final victory over the home team in Sydney. Much of the power of this image comes from the connection the viewer receives from Mary’s longing gaze at the ball heading towards the unseen goal.

A traditional F1 celebration that has become routine for Max Verstappen. Here we see him celebrating with champagne on the podium after winning the Monaco Grand Prix. What makes this particular image different is the details captured in such close-up. Anybody making bubbles?

Fleetwood’s relief

Tommy Fleetwood shows us a very different side of victory: the pure relief and exhaustion reflected so well in his expression, bathed in afternoon sun, after Marco Simone won his singles match on the final day of the Ryder Cup at Golf. The club is like Europe sees Americans.

Frankie’s farewell (sort of)

DettoriDettori

Dettori

It is fitting that we end with another grand retirement and, for the sake of symmetry, another picture with arms outstretched, looking up at the sky. Frankie Dettori, who is here with groom Chetan Singh after The Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes, has amassed 3,345 wins, 23 of which are classics, in his 35-year career. No bad. Not bad at all. He will actually continue racing in the US – some even believe he could return to Ascot next year – but this year was his official farewell to Europe for a long time.
