This isn’t entirely new ground for Michelin. The guide has always included accommodation recommendations and currently lists 5,000 hotels worldwide. Like Culinary Stars, the Keys are awarded following visits from anonymous judges whose identities are protected by secrecy to prevent any special treatment. Inspectors and top hotel and restaurant professionals from around the world work in committees to choose which hotels will stand out.

Poullennec offered a few more clues about what investigators were looking for. John O’Ceallaigh, founder of luxury travel consultancy and content agency Lute, thinks it’s a smart move for Michelin to reposition itself at the more innovative end of travel.
